No crisis for French commerce websites

Despite the financial crisis, French e-commerce keeps growing.



According to a CREDOC study*, 78% of the French population bought products and services online over the past twelve months, it is 8% more than in 2009. Despite an economic activity slowing down, the industry grew of 30% on the second semester of 2009 according to the FEVAD (Fédération du e-commerce et de la vente à distance).


This growth is attributed to an increase of people buying online worldwide with:


- a democratization of social and generational criterias

- an increase of internet penetration and braodband access

- a higher level of trust


Considering the current economic, consumers opt for the procedure allowing them to find more affordable offers by comparing prices. Today, buying online is the main purchasing channel in France with a proportion of exclusive buyers of 23% compared to 7% four years ago*.


In the UK, the consumers give also preferences to online shopping with 55% adults internet users buying something on the web said the Office for National Statistics (ONS).


The growth of the number of commerce sites stay strong and the FEVAD stays optimistic with the future anticipating an evolution 20 % for the next two years leading the French market at 31.2 billion of euros in 2010.
